Unprecedented Length of Trial.

The difference in time consumed in criminal court procedures in this and other countries is illustrated by a trial reported from Chemnitz, Germany, in a German newspaper, in which the pare stated in astonishment that the trial lasted a whole week.

A woman was the defendant accused of poisoning her little daughter, whose life she had insured, and of arson to gain fire insurance. Both charges were submitted to the jury at the same time and acted upon. Sixty-three witnesses had to be heard, among them six experts. The jury condemned the woman to death.

Fidgeting Children.

The child who shows no disposition to move about and is apparently happier sitting still will grow up to be slow-witted, heavy. On the other hand, the baby who is always using its arms and legs will be intelligent, its brain will work quickly, and it will without doubt be clever.

Children should consequently be encouraged when in the infant stage to throw their arms and legs about, to play with their fingers and toes, and when they are older the wise parent will not insist on their keeping still.

Obesity Treatment.

The Journal of the American Medical Association warns against the use of thyroid as an obesity cure. It is dangerous because it reduces protein as well as fat, and has been known to bring on serious illness. Most cases of undue wight are due to overeating, or lack of sufficient exercise, or both. The safest treatment for obesity is abstemiousness combined with exercise--not too violent, for that might injure the heart.

Automatic Hen Trap Nest.
Enables Owner to Tell Which Chicken Has Laid Egg—Made Vermin Proof and Safe From Rats.

Who says poultry raising is not a science? A Pennsylvania man has just come forward with an automatic trap nest by means of which the farmer can tell which hen laid which egg. As the hen enters the nest her weight on the floor causes the door to close. When she lays an egg it rolls down upon another spring-operated mechanism and opens the exit door. The runway into which this exit leads has a series of small stalls. As she passes through each the door closes behind her, and she cannot go back. The next hen goes through the same performance, and her egg rolls into position just back of that laid by No. 1. It is easy, therefore, to match chickens with eggs and find what kind of food gives the best results. The trap nest is made vermin proof and the eggs in it are safe from the voracity of rats or other animals, or even the chickens themselves.

New Device.

There is a new street car device intended to enable the conductor to call off the names of the streets without opening the door. But what's the use? It will sound the same anyway.
